Bilirubin Blood Test: What You Need to Know
The Bilirubin Blood Test is a common diagnostic tool used to measure bilirubin levels in the blood. Bilirubin is a yellow pigment produced when red blood cells break down. This test is primarily used to evaluate liver function and diagnose liver and gallbladder disorders.
1. Total Bilirubin
This test measures the combined levels of unconjugated (indirect) and conjugated (direct) bilirubin in the blood, providing an overall assessment of bilirubin levels.
2. Direct Bilirubin
The direct bilirubin test specifically measures conjugated bilirubin, the water-soluble form that has been processed by the liver.
3. Indirect Bilirubin
Indirect bilirubin refers to the water-insoluble form that has not yet been processed by the liver.
4. Liver Function Evaluation
Bilirubin levels serve as a key marker of liver health. Elevated levels may indicate hepatitis, cirrhosis, liver damage, or bile duct obstruction.
5. Gallbladder Disorders
Abnormal bilirubin levels can also point to gallbladder conditions, such as gallstones or cholecystitis (gallbladder inflammation).
6. Jaundice Assessment
Jaundice, a condition that causes yellowing of the skin and eyes, is often linked to high bilirubin levels. This test helps determine the severity and cause of jaundice.
